I wanted to mount the unit under the ceiling by the rear door, venting it through the large cutoff in the rear door above the window. With this location,
the size and weight was very important. The theoretically smallest unit that I could find was Frigidaire FAX054P7A that has listed dimensions 15.5"Wx12"Dx11.5"H. It took me awhile to find the unit, since it is discontinued. Finally I got one on Craigslist.
To mount the unit I build a steel frame attached to the last ceiling rib and to rear frame piece of the van.

Then I just slid the unit inside the frame.
Position and sizing of the frame was calculated to accommodate the future bottom panel of the rear shelf that was laid directly on sidewall frame.
After rear top shelf was built, AC became enclosed in sealed box inside the van that has three openings to the outside in the rear: left and right for air intake and center for air exhaust. Each of these openings will be connected to the large rectangular opening that will be cut in the top section of the rear door above the window by separated channels in such a way that intake and exhaust will not mix. Detailed design and build of the venting through the door framework I postponed till next summer, as there is no need for AC now with winter quickly approaching.

For the roof fan I chose MaxxAir fan with manual controls and variable speed, since it allows using fan in the rain. The installation was trivial as it is described in many conversion posts and videos, with only specific detail: I installed the fan mid-roof length-wise (behind the solar panels) and off center width-wise, since the fan position was by the bathroom, which is quite wide.
